Balance, good proportion and well-shaped contour are some of the main characteristics of an attractive human body. However, that perfect silhouette is difficult to be achieved even with hard work at the gym and a strict diet.
Liposuction is a plastic surgery procedure used for sculpting and improving body contour. Through this procedure, the plastic surgeon is able to remove unwanted fat from those areas that are resistant to exercises and diet.
There are several body contouring procedures available on the market – tummy tuck, tumescent or traditional liposuction surgery, laser-assisted liposuction, as well as ultrasound-assisted liposuction or Vaser Liposuction. Here we will take a deep dive into understanding the Vaser Liposuction procedure and everything you need to know about this less invasive form of liposuction.
About a dozen people undergo liposuction in Singapore daily. However, the idea of liposuction is to reshape parts of the body rather than losing weight. It is a method of suctioning out fat and is also called lipoplasty, liposculpture, lipectomy, and simply lipo. In general, a liposuction procedure is used to address fat deposition, more specifically that fat that hasn’t responded well to diet or exercise.
VASER liposuction is the latest technology body contouring procedure in melting fats with ultrasound technology and removing fat via suction. It is a special liposuction technique that aims to selectively, effectively and safely remove unwanted body fats without causing any disturbance to important structures such as blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue. Dr Shens, who prides himself as an experienced liposuction surgeon in Singapore, has performed VASER liposuction effectively for many patients over the years.
In general, the key difference between different types of liposuction is how the fat is extracted. While traditional liposuction is an invasive procedure that uses a vacuum suction device to suck out the fat, Vaser liposuction is a minimally invasive type of liposuction where ultrasonic waves are used to emulsify the fatty tissue. Ultrasound-assisted technology is considered safer as it attacks only the fat cells without damaging other structures. It allows the surgeon to remove larger amounts of fat which is usually not recommended in tumescent liposuction. There is minimal chance of more serious complications such as excessive blood loss or the formation of blood clots.
Aside from safety, effectiveness and progressive technology, other factors of the Vaser liposuction procedure includes:

A cannula (small suction tube) is attached with vacuum technology for the suction of fatty tissues from the body. The suction technique varies by the way the fatty tissues are approached, whether to suction the fats straight out of the body as it is or emulsified first by ultrasonic energy.
This will determine the diameter of the cannula used as well.
Advances in technology have made it possible to remove fatty tissue from virtually any part of the body, such as hips, thighs and buttocks. Indeed, it will destroy other unwanted pockets of fat from the arms, knees, ankles, stomach, breasts, back, waist, chin, neck and chest.
Liposuction or VASER Liposuction would be suitable for almost anybody who meets the requirements below:
The procedure will not be effective for patients who are severely overweight or have excess loose skin.
The procedure is performed under sedation or local anaesthesia, which are administered by an anaesthetist in our day surgery facility. Our cosmetic surgeon will proceed with the Vaser liposuction procedure during the effect of the anaesthesia. During the process, it will be pain-free, as the patient will be sleeping.
Typically, liposuction is a one-time procedure, but like most procedures, the results vary. For each thigh, usually, it requires between 2 to 3 areas of liposuction. For the abdomen, it is between 4 to 6 areas, and for the arms, between 2 to 3 areas per arm. Patients with BMI above 28 would not be able to undergo liposuction in a private clinical setting.
In any case, for the purpose of the best outcome, having a detailed discussion with the cosmetic surgeon is ideal.
Alternatively, our cosmetic surgeon can also combine liposuction with other cosmetic procedures such as Fat Transfer. After removing the fat cells, the surgeon will transfer them into other parts of the body such as the face, breasts and buttocks. By transferring the fats, from the same person, into the same body, results can be natural-looking, longer-lasting and no risk of rejection.
In the event that high weight fluctuation is present, the process of weight gain would step in. Hence, it is best to maintain a healthy diet regime.

The cost of liposuction in Singapore may vary widely and may require the removal of at least five body parts per treatment. Some factors such as the body type, size and number of the areas that will be treated, the fees of the surgeon and others will determine the final cost of liposuction.
