Vaser Liposuction

Balance, good proportion and well-shaped contour are some characteristics commonly associated with an attractive human body. However, a ‘perfect’ silhouette is difficult to achieve even with hard work at the gym and a strict diet.

Liposuction is a plastic surgery procedure used for sculpting and improving body contour. Through this procedure, the plastic surgeon is able to remove unwanted fat from those areas that are resistant to exercises and diet.

There are several body contouring procedures available on the market in Singapore – tummy tuck, tumescent or traditional liposuction surgery, laser-assisted liposuction, as well as ultrasound-assisted liposuction or vibration amplification of sound energy at resonance (VASER)-assisted liposuction. Here we will take a deep dive into understanding the VASER lipo procedure and everything you need to know about this less invasive form of liposuction.

What is VASER Liposuction?

About a dozen people undergo liposuction in Singapore daily and a common misperception of the procedure is that it helps with weight loss. However, the idea of liposuction is to reshape parts of the body rather than losing weight as it is a method of suctioning out fat. In general, a liposuction procedure is used to address fat deposition, more specifically that fat that hasn’t responded well to diet or exercise.

VASER liposuction is a relatively new form of body contouring procedure involving melting fats with ultrasound technology and removing fat via suction. Its thermal ultrasound technique aims achieve coagulative necrosis of adipocytes with sparing of vessels and nerves – in other words to selectively, effectively and safely remove unwanted body fats without causing any disturbance to important structures such as blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue. Dr Shens, who prides himself as an experienced liposuction surgeon in Singapore, has performed VASER liposuction effectively for many patients over the years.

VASER Liposuction versus Conventional Liposuction

In general, the key difference between different types of liposuction is how the fat is extracted. While traditional liposuction is an invasive procedure that uses a vacuum suction device to suck out the fat, VASER liposuction is a minimally invasive type of liposuction where ultrasonic waves are used to emulsify the fatty tissue. Ultrasound-assisted technology is considered safer as it attacks only the fat cells without damaging other structures. It allows the surgeon to remove larger amounts of fat which is usually not recommended in tumescent liposuction. This helps to lessen the chance of more serious complications such as excessive blood loss or the formation of blood clots.

Aside from its safety and effectiveness considerations, other factors of the VASER liposuction procedure include:

  • less painful treatment
  • minor swelling
  • minimal bruising
  • shorter recovery time
  • control in delicate areas with greater precision
  • internal ultrasound that can help support additional tightening of the skin over time

As VASER liposuction can achieve greater precision in delicate areas, some clinics may also offer specialised procedures such as 4D High Definition VASER Liposuction for individuals interested in body contouring.

About the VASER Liposuction Procedure

How does VASER Liposuction remove fat?

A cannula (small suction tube) is attached with vacuum technology for the suction of fatty tissues from the body. The suction technique varies by the way the fatty tissues are approached, whether to suction the fats straight out of the body as it is or emulsified first by ultrasonic energy.

This will determine the diameter of the cannula used as well.

Advances in technology have made it possible to remove fatty tissue from virtually any part of the body, including hip liposuction, thigh liposuction, abdominoplasty, or even buttocks liposuction. Indeed, VASER lipo can be applied to unwanted pockets of fat from the arms, knees, ankles, stomach, breasts, back, waist, chin, neck and chest.

How suitable is VASER Liposuction for you?

Liposuction or VASER Liposuction would be suitable for almost anybody who meets the requirements below:

  • People who are approximately within 30% of their ideal weight who also have good muscle tone and firm, elastic skin (including the strong abdominal wall)
  • Healthy individuals who do not have problems with blood flow, high blood pressure, a life-threatening illness or medical conditions that can impair healing
  • Non-smokers
  • Those with positive outlooks and specific goals for body contouring
  • If the amount of excess fat deposits bothers you – located anywhere on your body – that don’t respond to diet or exercise, liposuction may be right for you.
  • The abdominal area, thighs and buttocks can be affected, as well as the neck, backs of the arms, and elsewhere.

The procedure will not be effective for patients who are severely overweight or have excess loose skin.

Is the VASER Liposuction procedure painful?

The procedure is performed under sedation or local anaesthesia, which are administered by an anaesthetist in our day surgery facility. Our cosmetic surgeon will proceed with the VASER liposuction procedure during the effect of the anaesthesia. During the process, it will be pain-free, as the patient will be sleeping.

How many sessions does this VASER Liposuction procedure typically need?

Typically, VASER liposuction is a one-time procedure, but like most procedures, the results vary. For each thigh, usually, it may require between 2 to 3 areas of liposuction. For the abdomen, it may require between 4 to 6 areas, and for the arms, between 2 to 3 areas per arm. Patients with BMI above 28 would not be able to undergo liposuction in a private clinical setting.

In any case, for the purpose of the best outcome, having a detailed discussion with the cosmetic surgeon prior to the surgery is ideal to understand and set realistic expectations.

Transferring the removed fats

Alternatively, our cosmetic surgeon can also combine VASER liposuction with other cosmetic procedures such as Fat Transfer. After removing the fat cells, the surgeon will transfer them into other parts of the body such as the face, breasts and buttocks. By transferring the fats, from the same person, into the same body, results can be natural-looking, longer-lasting and no risk of rejection.

Will the fats come back again?

VASER liposuction is not a permanent fat removal process, and is not a weight loss procedure either. In the event that high weight fluctuation is present, the process of weight gain would step in which may result in growth of the remaining fat cells in the targeted area.

What to expect of the VASER Liposuction procedure?

Before procedure

  • Patients who smoke are most likely advised to refrain from smoking at least six weeks into the procedure. This is to prepare and to ensure a smooth bloodstream.
  • Two weeks before the VASER liposuctionprocedure, refrain from taking any forms of blood-thinning medication, multi-vitamins and supplements to minimise the risk of bleeding profusely during the surgery.

On procedure day

  • Wear comfortable clothes
  • Since VASER liposuction is an outpatient procedure, it is good to arrange for someone who can get you home safely after the surgery.

Post-procedure and post-operative recovery

  • A VASER liposuction recovery time typically ranges from 1 to 2 weeks depending on the individual.
  • Patients are recommended to rest for a few hours post-surgery to let the drowsiness effects of sedation wear off.
  • The medical staff of Shens Clinic will provide instructions and guidelines on care and maintenance to prevent post-operative complications, tailored to individual patients’ conditions.
  • Depending on the area of liposuction treatment, a compression garment may need to be worn.
  • Pressure dressing also helps to minimise swelling and promote skin contraction; in most cases, it is recommended to be worn continuously except while taking a bath.
  • There may be some bruising, but it should be reduced in a couple of days. Providers can prescribe painkillers to help with bruising, inflammation, or mild to moderate pain associated with typical post-operative recovery.
  • During the week of the recovery period, the cosmetic surgery clinic that performed the surgery should arrange for a check-up on the progress.
  • No strenuous activity is recommended for 3 or 4 weeks after the procedure
  • On average, visible results in body contouring or silhouette should typically appear within *6 months post-surgery. However, results will vary according to the individual.

Estimated VASER Liposuction Costs in Singapore

The cost of VASER liposuction in Singapore may vary widely depending on body type and composition, the size of the target areas for fat removal, and the number of areas a patient wants to be treated in. Clinic and surgeon fees are also factored into a final cost estimate, which a trained plastic surgeon should be able to provide for you during an initial consultation. Generally speaking, costs of VASER liposuction procedures start from $1,688 per area (for example the tummy area could cover 4 to 6 areas). Due to a high level of personalisation of the procedure required for each individual, it's best to book a consultation with a plastic surgeon about an estimate tailored to your needs and surgical objectives.
