These days, plastic surgeries are more common and desired than ever. On average, about 23 million cosmetic operations are performed every year in the world. The increased number of them includes both male and female, although out of every 10 interventions, 9 were for women. In addition to breast augmentation and eyelid correction, which have always been very popular operations, in recent years, fat transfer (fat grafting or autologous fat transfer) surgeries have also been in higher demand in Singapore.
In fact, fat grafting frequency has increased by more than 4%. It is a cosmetic procedure that involves removing from one part of the body and placing it into another area. For example, the procedure is often used for “moving” fat from thighs to the breast to enlarge the cup size without using breast implants. However, this plastic surgery can also be used for improving the face contour and even the buttocks.
Here you will learn more about autologous fat grafting procedures and particularly about facial fat grafting, micro fat grafting and nano fat grafting.
Facial fat transfer refers to the enhanced fat transfer and growth factor rejuvenation program. Compared with fillers, facial fat grafting is considered a more natural way to replace lost volume. Whereas fillers are usually not permanent, facial fat grafting can last for many years.
With fat transfer, it is possible to have fat liposuctioned from your thighs or abdomen and then transferred to any area of your body. Re-injected fat lasts longer in larger areas of non-movement, so it is very successful for the correction of sunken cheeks because this area does not move as often. Fat transfer can also correct atrophic ageing of the hands and post-surgical and post-traumatic defects.
Suitable treatment areas include:
Cheek augmentation is an invasive procedure that makes your cheek bigger. Additionally, bigger cheeks will make you look younger and your eyes – more prominent. Volume augmentation is usually needed when you get older, and your cheeks lose volume both from fat and from bone loss. When it comes to restoring that loss of volume, there are different techniques that are used. One of them is using a cheek implant, and the other option is with fat injection or fat transfer.
There are a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and you can even make custom implants based on your individual anatomy. However, as with dermal filler, the implant is a foreign body placed under your skin. Another problem with cheek implants is that they cannot be tailored to suit your changing features over time and can often look too large after a period of years.
The advantage of doing that surgical procedure is that it gives natural results as the used material is your own tissue. It is common for the surgeon to inject a little bit of extra fat during the fat transfer surgery in order to compensate for the inevitable chance that some cells will not survive and may be reabsorbed by the body. It leaves healthy tissue to form a blood supply to the face and is thus permanent.
Certain amounts of fat are removed from an area where a fat deposit is observed, like the abdomen or thighs—using a small needle attached to a syringe does this action.
After the fat is removed, it is processed to remove excess fluids and then re-injected using a small cannula which is placed just under the skin or muscle. This process may be repeated until the desired outcome is achieved.
The procedure takes about 1 hour and is expertly performed by our consultant cosmetic surgeon.
Thin injection cannulas are used for micro fat grafting. The fat used for this is processed into nano fat. Micro nano fat grafting is different from fat grafting by a thin fraction.
Nano fat grafting is done to correct superficial rhytides, scars and dark lower eyelid rings. Nano fat grafting is most suitable for skin rejuvenation purposes.
After the procedure:
Most patients are up and around immediately. However, the procedure will cause a swollen face for approximately five to seven days*. This discomfort will be controlled with the provided medication. There may be bruising as well that may be covered with make-up. It is best to keep the head upright and avoid bending the head down, as it will cause more bruising and swelling.
There will be no scarring after the procedure, but facial massage and treatment should be avoided during the first six weeks*. The final desired outcome will be seen after two months*.
