Korean Style Scarless Eye bag Removal

Scarless & Safe Procedure

Eyebag removal

Eye bag removal procedures can help reduce fat in the undereye area, helping you achieve your desired appearance.

The presence of under-eye bags (sometimes referred to as a lower eyelid fat prolapse) is a common cosmetic condition where the area beneath the eyes appears bulged and swollen. It usually affects middle-aged people. However, we can also see many young men and women in Singapore suffering from bags and dark circles under the eyes.

This is not surprising given the hectic lifestyle we lead these days. The lack of sleep, tiredness and unhealthy diet are some of the main culprits for the presence of eye puffiness and dark circles under the eyes in younger people. Sometimes those bulges can be genetic as well, resulting in pronounced under-eye bags even if you maintain good lifestyle habits.

Individuals who wish to remove bulging, swollen, or excessive under-eye bags can consider transconjunctival blepharoplasty, also known as eye bag removal. Eye bag removal is performed to remove excess fat or tissue from the lower eye area, resulting in a more youthful appearance. Find out more about options for this procedure in Singapore.

How does Korean-style scarless eye bag removal work?

Eye Bag Removal Surgery by Shens Clinic

Korean-style scarless eye bag removal is an office-based surgical procedure that eliminates the eye bag by getting rid of fat and excess skin from the lower eyelid without making any cut on the skin. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and can be completed in just under 30 minutes when undertaken by a qualified surgeon trained in the technique. Dr Shens has received training in this technique, and is qualified to perform it in Singapore.

Eye Bag Removal Procedure

An initial consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon should always be carried out prior to the Korean-style scarless eye bag removal procedure. This will enable the surgeon to discuss the patient’s intended surgical outcomes, and to recommend suitable procedures accordingly.

On the day of the surgery, the surgeon will begin by marking out the site with a surgical pen. This enables the surgeon to perform the procedure with precision, targeting only specific areas of the lower eye area.

Eye shields are used to ensure a sterile field. Local anaesthetic is then injected into the lower eyelid and target area to numb it.

A small incision is made on the inside of the lower eyelid, specifically in the conjunctiva (the mucous membrane that covers the front of the eye and lines the inside of the eyelids). This minimises visible scarring post-surgery. The surgeon then removes or redistributes the excess lower eyelid fat prolapse through this incision before clothing the incision with sutures.

Who can undergo Eye Bag Removal Surgery?

Any one of the following factors may indicate that you may be a good candidate for scarless eye bag surgery:

  • excessive skin or skin laxity;
  • puffiness on the lower eyelids making the eyes appear tired;
  • the lower eyelids have fat tissue or fine “crepe paper” wrinkles.

If you want to undergo such a procedure, you would need to be in good overall health. In case you have any pre-existing medical condition, make sure you inform your surgeon about that.

Types of Eyebag Condition

Type 1 Eye Bags

  • Mild fats accumulate under the eyes
  • Not prominent. Eyebag can only be seen if you look upwards.

Type 2 Eye Bags

  • More prominent and more noticeable than Type 1.
  • Accumulated fats can cause small semi-circle-shaped bags, affecting a person’s visual appearance.

Type 3 Eye Bags

  • Most prominent type of eye bag.
  • Semi-circle-shaped bags are larger, and may appear swollen or droopy.

What is the Recovery Time for Eye Bag Removal Surgery?

The recommended recovery time for eye bag removal surgery tends to be 10 to 14 days. After that, you will be able to return to work and your normal activities. Since it is an outpatient procedure, you don’t need to stay overnight at the clinic. Your surgeon will give you post-surgery instructions on what care to take for the treated area. Following them is essential for a smooth and quick recovery. You might be recommended to apply ice packs for the first two days after surgery. The cold temperature will help you minimise swelling and bruising in the area.

Are there any risks or side effects related to eye bag removal surgery?

Some of the possible complications after eye bag removal procedure include:

  • swelling and bruising;
  • infection and bleeding;
  • cysts or skin discolouration.

There is a minimal chance of experiencing any side effects if eye bag removal surgery is performed by a well trained and qualified plastic surgeon in Singapore. Having trained in Korea in this particular technique, Dr Shens has performed it in over five thousand cases and is qualified to perform it in Singapore.

What causes EYE BAGS?

Genes

Often eye bags are hereditary. It is difficult to remove these types of bulges using expensive eye bag creams or non-surgical procedures. Although laser resurfacing may improve the skin around the eyes, it cannot completely eliminate hereditary eye bags. Surgical eye bag removal might be the only way to get rid of them.

Ageing or senescence

Ageing causes the tissues around the eyes and the supportive muscles become weaker. Due to that, we lose fat from our subcutaneous tissue, which makes the lower eyelids appear swollen. In case you start taking proper care of your skin and the area around your eyes from an early age, it might be possible to prevent the appearance of this type of eye bags. But once they occur, you cannot easily get rid of them. Laser treatments and eye bag creams might be useful in case you have light to moderate puffiness. However, laser therapy has a temporary effect, so you may need to repeat the treatment repeatedly. In addition, this eye bag removal procedure is not appropriate for all skin types.

Water retention

Excessive consumption of foods rich in salt and alcoholic beverages can definitely have a negative impact on your face and skin, especially on the under-eye area. As everyone knows, salty food is usually the main culprit of fluid accumulation, and the most affected part is the area below the eyes. Some natural treatments and non-surgical procedures may help you reduce the appearance of bags under the eyes caused by water retention. However, if you have severe eye bags, you may need surgical treatment.

Allergies

Seasonal allergies and dry skin and eyes can also contribute to the appearance of dark circles and eye bags. When you have an allergic reaction, your body releases histamines, which can cause itchy and red eyes. This can cause you to rub your eyes, increasing the symptoms and contributing to swelling in the lower eyelid. Those eye bags usually disappear when you don’t have contact with the allergen.

Pseudo eyebags (pretarsal muscle)

These are eye bags that are actually caused by loss of volume in the mid-face and thinning of the skin over the eye socket. Those make the under-eye area look protruded and blood vessels more prominent. The volume loss in that area may occur as a consequence of weight loss or just because of ageing. For these types of bags under the eyes, a qualified plastic surgeon may recommend filler injection, skin boosters or fat grafting to help with regaining a youthful look. However, if excess fat is observed on the lower eyelids, a surgical eye bag removal procedure might be needed.

Chronic medical conditions

There are some health conditions such as thyroid disease or kidney issues that may contribute to the presence of bags and eye puffiness. In these cases, it is necessary to treat the underlying condition first before opting for eye bag removal surgery.

There are a variety of causes of bags under the eyes, and obviously, the choice of the best medical treatment depends on each individual’s condition. However, scarless eye bag removal surgery in Singapore tends to be the only permanent and reliable solution as the other treatment methods give only short term results. After surgical removal, recurrence would typically take in excess of 8-10 years*.

* Results may vary depending on the individual.

Can you get rid of eye bags naturally?

Applying cold compresses, chilled spoons, or topical creams may help you shrink the blood vessels and reduce the appearance of bags and dark circles under the eyes. However, these natural treatment options do not work all the time, and this is especially true if your eye bags are caused by ageing or are genetically inherited.

Natural eye bag treatments and eye creams are better to be used preventively before developing severe eye bags or under-eye circles.

Is non-surgical eye bag removal better than surgical?

Surgical eye bag removal is one of the best cosmetic procedures for eliminating bags and puffiness under the eyes. The majority of people who undergo this operation don’t need future touch-ups because their under-eye bags are permanently eliminated. While some non-surgical eye bag removal procedures can smooth and significantly improve skin elasticity and the appearance of the under-eye contour, such results might be not long-lasting. In addition, such procedures may cause unpleasant side effects. Compared to such options, surgical eye bag removal has a higher efficacy rate as its results tend to be more long-term.

Myths about eye bag removal using non-surgical methods

While eye bag surgery is one of the most effective options for long-term or permanent eye bag removal, many individuals may still consider non-surgical options first. Here are some of the common non-surgical alternatives for eye bag removal and dark eye circle removal in Singapore, and how they may compare to eye bag surgery:

Radiofrequency or needle-based delivery of heat

Radiofrequency eye bag removal involves inserting a needle with radiofrequency into the lower eyelid in order to remove or melt under eye fat permanently. During the process, multiple needles leave micro-punctures in the skin while simultaneously delivering heat to the target area. This process can sometimes burn the eye skin and leave pigments or permanent scars on the lower eyelids that are extremely difficult to remove. The melted fat may also form cysts known as fat necrotic lumps which can be felt in the lower eyelid by patients, shows when smiling, and requires additional surgery to remove.

Laser eye bag surgery

Laser eye bag surgery uses laser technology to melt excess fat in the lower eyelid, causing a reduction in eye bag prominence when performed successfully. While the procedure carries similar risks to Korean-style scarless eye bag removal, the surgical area may experience excessive swelling during recovery causing greater discomfort for the patient.

Dermal fillers

Injectable fillers might be recommended by some cosmetic surgeons to restore the volume in the tear trough and improve the appearance of dark eye circles. While they can make the under-eye area look fuller and smoother, they are less effective if patients’ protruded lower eyelids are due to genes or fluid retention. In addition, dermal fillers generally last for up to six months and do not provide long-lasting results, so patients may need to repeat the procedure regularly to maintain treatment outcomes.

Micro Fat Grafting

A better alternative to dermal fillers is an aesthetic procedure called fat grafting or fat transfer, similar to breast fat transfer augmentation. It is a surgery where fat is taken from a certain area of the body and injected into the area under the eyes. The biggest advantages of fat grafting are that it uses your own fat and gives permanent results, but it may require up to six months to see the full result.

Frequently Asked Questions About Eye Bag Removal

Does eye bag removal surgery give permanent results?

Eye bag removal surgery typically results in long-lasting effects which some patients might describe as ‘permanent’. This is because the fat cells in the lower eyelid have been removed and will not grow back on their own. While it is possible for eye bags to redevelop in the surgical site, it is a fairly unlikely occurrence. Patients rarely require additional eye bag removal surgeries to maintain upkeep, but this may vary across individuals.
