Fat Grafting Breast

Breast Fat Transfer - Safe & Natural Breast Augmentation

What is Fat Grafting Breast?

Fat grafting breast augmentation, also known as autologous fat transfer to the breasts, is a natural breast enhancement technique that uses the patient’s own fat tissues harvested from other body parts such as the abdomen, thighs, or buttocks. This technique can be an appealing option for those looking to subtly enhance the shape and volume of their breasts, which may have changed due to ageing, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or significant weight loss. While offering a more modest increase in volume, this method can also help address issues like breast asymmetry and is generally considered a less invasive alternative to traditional breast implants.

As you explore your options for breast augmentation in Singapore, you'll likely encounter the widely known and popular method of using breast implants for breast enlargement. Fat grafting breast augmentation offers a potential alternative method for breast augmentation.

3 Stages of Breast Fat Grafting Procedure

Stage 1: Fat Extraction

The first step in breast fat grafting involves the extraction of fat from other parts of the body. This part of the process is done through liposuction, at Shens Clinic, the Vaser liposuction technique is used (You may read more about Vaser liposuction here). Once the fats are harvested, they will be processed as injectables to be injected into the breasts. The amount of fats to be drawn out is dependent on the desired outcome of the patient. Breast fat transfer may also require several sessions to ensure that the body has accepted the injected fats from the previous round.

Before undergoing breast fat transfer, patients will also have to be assessed by the doctor to see if they are suitable candidates and have sufficient fat to be harvested.

Stage 2: Processing and Injection

Once the fats are harvested, they will be processed as injectables to be injected into the breasts. The amount of fats to be drawn out is dependent on the desired outcome of the patient. Breast fat transfer may also require several sessions to ensure that the body has accepted the injected fats from the previous round.

Stage 3: Recovery and Follow-Up

The fat grafting breast augmentation is done as an outpatient surgery where patients will be able to return home after the surgery. The duration of the surgery would be dependent on several factors, such as the amount of fats to be harvested, but it will usually be completed in around 2 hours.

Advantages of Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation

Breast fat transfer is an appealing option for enhancing breast size and shape by using the patient's own body fat. Here are some potential advantages of this natural approach to breast augmentation though results may vary from individual to individual:

  • Natural Tissue Use: The procedure primarily utilises your own fat tissues, offering a more natural feel compared to synthetic breast implants. This may help the augmented breasts feel similar to natural breast tissue.
  • Reduced Risk of Complications: Using fat from the patient's own body typically minimises the risk of allergic reactions or rejection, which are concerns with artificial implants.
  • Less Invasive: Fat grafting generally involves less invasive techniques than traditional breast implant surgeries, which can lead to less scarring and a quicker recovery period.
  • Dual Benefit: The process not only aims to enhance the breasts but also provides the opportunity to contour other body areas. Fat is removed via liposuction from places like the abdomen, thighs, or buttocks, and repurposed for breast augmentation.

Fat Grafting Breast Risks

While breast fat transfer is generally considered safe, there are some risks and limitations to be aware of, and the success rate can vary. Here are some key points to consider:

  • Safety and Cancer Risk: Fat grafting does not typically increase the risk of breast cancer. However, like any medical procedure, it's important to discuss all potential risks with your healthcare provider.
  • Reabsorption of Fat: A notable challenge with fat grafting is that some of the injected fat may be reabsorbed by the body over time, which can lead to a reduction in breast volume. This process varies significantly among individuals.
  • Comparative Results: While fat grafting provides a natural augmentation, it generally cannot achieve the same increase in breast size as breast implants. The extent of enlargement possible through fat transfer is limited and depends on the amount of usable donor fat as well as the individual's body response.
  • Time and Body Acceptance: The process requires adequate time for the body to establish a blood supply to the newly transferred fat cells, which is crucial for the success of the augmentation. The degree of acceptance and longevity of the results can vary based on individual physiological factors.

How Permanent Is The Breast Fat Transfer?

Fat grafting can provide potentially long-lasting results and it usually takes around 4-6 months after the procedure is done to see the final results. However, it is important to note that there will not be a full survival rate for the fats that are transferred. The surviving fat cells can establish a blood supply and become a permanent part of the breasts. Maintaining a stable weight after the procedure can help preserve the results.

What to Expect for Your Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation Procedure

Embarking on a fat transfer breast augmentation involves several key steps, from the initial consultation to the surgery itself. Here’s what you can expect throughout the process:

Consultation

  • Initial Assessment: During the consultation, your surgeon will assess your overall health, discuss your aesthetic goals, and determine whether you are a suitable candidate for the procedure. This includes evaluating the areas of your body suitable for fat removal and the potential for enhancing your breast size and shape.
  • Discussion of Expectations: It’s important to have a realistic understanding of what the procedure can achieve. Your surgeon will explain the likely outcomes, the nature of the procedure, potential risks, and the recovery process.
  • Planning the Procedure: Together with your surgeon, you will decide on the specifics of the procedure, including how much fat will be transferred and from which areas it will be harvested. This planning phase is crucial for aligning the surgical outcomes with your expectations.

Surgery

The procedure usually requires local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia, depending on the extent of fat removal and transfer.

  • Preparation and Fat Extraction: To minimise bleeding and facilitate fat removal, tumescent fluid is injected into the donor sites, typically the abdomen and/or thighs. Using small incisions less than 1 cm in length, fat is gently syringed out from the donor areas. These incisions are strategically placed to be well-hidden and minimise visible scarring.

  • Fat Processing Using Coleman's Technique: The harvested fat undergoes centrifugation to separate it into three distinct layers: an upper layer of free oil, a middle layer of usable fat, and a lower layer of water, blood, and tumescent fluid. The middle layer, consisting of purified and viable fat, is carefully extracted for use in augmentation.

  • Fat Transfer Technique: The processed, usable fat is then gently injected under the skin of the breasts using multiple small 1 ml syringes. This method allows for precise placement of the fat in small aliquots to ensure a natural look and feel. The sites for injection are carefully chosen to be well hidden within the areola to minimise any visible scarring.

After the surgery, you will spend a short time in recovery, where your condition and comfort will be monitored before you are allowed to go home.

Post-Surgery Recovery Time for Breast Fat Transfer

On the Day of Fat Grafting Surgery

Typically, breast fat transfer surgery is conducted on an outpatient basis, allowing you to return home the same day. Following the procedure, you should anticipate bruising, swelling, and discomfort in the treated areas, including the liposuction and injection sites. To aid in healing and reduce swelling, your plastic surgeon may recommend you wear a compression garment continuously for a specified duration. This supportive garment promotes faster healing. Pain relief medication may also be prescribed to alleviate soreness and discomfort. It is crucial to prioritize ample rest on the day following the surgery.

First 3 Weeks Post Surgery

It is completely normal to experience pain in the first few days following the procedure. As mentioned earlier, this discomfort can be effectively managed with medication prescribed by your doctor. Most patients typically feel discomfort for approximately three to five days, after which it gradually improves, leading to a significant improvement in how you feel. The duration of swelling can vary depending on your body's individual recovery ability.

During the initial week or so after fat transfer augmentation, it is common to experience some discomfort around the injection sites and a sensation of tightness in the breasts. This is a normal part of the healing process and will subside along with any bruising or swelling. Heavy lifting and intense exercise should be avoided throughout the healing period. The overall downtime will vary based on your surgeon's assessment, typically falling within one to three weeks. Following this period, light exercises can be gradually reintroduced to your usual routine.

Post-operative Care Guidelines

  • It is essential to adhere to the post-operative instructions or prescribed medications provided by your surgeon.

  • To alleviate post-surgery pain and discomfort, utilizing extra pillows while lying down can provide support to your body and keep your arms elevated.

  • It is important to avoid prolonged bed rest and instead engage in light physical activity, such as walking after the initial 2-3 days of rest.

  • Sexual activities should be restricted for a minimum of 2-4 weeks following the surgery.

  • Abstain from consuming alcohol and smoking for the first 2-4 weeks after the procedure.

  • During the initial month, it is advisable to limit participation in strenuous exercises. Light walking or moving around within your home is acceptable and recommended.

  • To protect the injection site, it is recommended to sleep on your back for a duration of 2-3 weeks.

All in all, the overall recovery period for breast fat grafting will take around 2-3 months, however, it is also dependent on how many fat grafting sessions the patient requires. It is also vital to consult your plastic surgeon pre and post-operation to ensure that you are well briefed on the recovery period, process, and guidelines for the fat grafting surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fat Grafting Breast

Does fat grafting breast provide the same results as breast implants?

Fat grafting breast augmentation can provide natural-looking results and enhance the size and shape of the breasts. However, the amount of volume that can be achieved through fat grafting may be limited compared to traditional breast implants.

Can breast fat transfer correct breast asymmetry?

Yes, fat grafting can be an effective technique for correcting minor breast asymmetry. The plastic surgeon can strategically transfer fat to the smaller breast to achieve better symmetry and balance between the breasts. However, significant breast asymmetry may require additional procedures or a combination of fat grafting and implants for optimal results.

Will There be Noticeable Scars After Breast Fat Transfer?

The incisions made for fat grafting breast augmentation are typically small and discreet. The surgeon carefully places the incisions in areas to minimise visible scarring. Over time, the scars tend to fade and become less noticeable. Proper wound care and following your surgeon's instructions can help promote optimal healing and minimise scarring.
